It sets the narrative tone by presenting Sage Atri—renowned for spiritual realization—beginning an episode from ordinary waking life, implying that sacred outcomes in the Purana often unfold through simple, dharmic actions performed with inner purity.
Though the Linga is not named here, Kotirudra-saṃhitā frames events that lead toward Jyotirlinga glory; the verse functions as the opening scene that precedes a Shaiva sacred narrative where Saguna Shiva’s grace is typically revealed through lived devotion and auspicious conduct.
The verse indirectly highlights śauca (purity) and readiness upon waking—practically aligned with beginning one’s day with Shiva-smaraṇa, japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), and preparing pure water for ācamana or simple worship.
