Among them, the leading man was a Vaiśya named Supriya. He was devoted to Śiva, established in auspicious conduct, and was ever a steadfast follower of the Śaiva path.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Paśupatinātha
The verse establishes that spiritual excellence in the Śaiva Siddhānta sense is grounded in unwavering devotion to Śiva (bhakti) together with śubhācāra (right, purifying conduct). It highlights that steadfastness on the Śaiva path—rather than birth-status alone—is what makes one exemplary among people.
By calling Supriya a constant Śaiva and Śiva’s beloved, the verse implies regular, faithful observance of Saguna Śiva worship—classically expressed through Liṅga-pūjā, mantra-japa, and temple or tīrtha observances—where devotion is shown through disciplined conduct and service.
The practical takeaway is steady daily Śaiva discipline: japa of the Pañcākṣarī mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” along with śubhācāra such as purity, non-harm, and (where traditional) the use of vibhūti (tripuṇḍra) and rudrākṣa as supports for remembrance of Śiva.
