ज्योतिर्लिङ्ग-तदुपलिङ्ग-माहात्म्यवर्णनम्
Narration of the Greatness of the Jyotirliṅga and Associated Liṅgas
लिंगमयानि तीर्थानि सर्वं लिंगे प्रतिष्ठितम् । संख्या न विद्यते तेषां तानि किंचिद्ब्रवीम्यहम्
liṃgamayāni tīrthāni sarvaṃ liṃge pratiṣṭhitam | saṃkhyā na vidyate teṣāṃ tāni kiṃcidbravīmyaham
All tīrthas (sacred fords and holy places) are of the nature of the Liṅga, and everything is established in the Liṅga. Their number cannot be known; therefore I shall speak of only a few of them.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Sthala Purana: Having asserted innumerability, Sūta states that all tīrthas are ‘liṅga-maya’ and all is established in the Liṅga; therefore only a representative subset will be described—this is the textual logic behind curated lists (later tradition: Jyotirliṅgas).
Significance: Frames tīrtha-yātrā as contact with Śiva’s sustaining ground; visiting select liṅga-sthalas is a focused means to access the universal reality.
It teaches a Shaiva vision that the Liṅga (Saguna symbol of Pati, Lord Shiva) is the spiritual ground of all sanctity—pilgrimage becomes meaningful when it culminates in Liṅga-bhakti and remembrance of Shiva.
By declaring all tīrthas to be ‘liṅgamaya’ and established in the Liṅga, the text places Liṅga-pūjā above mere travel—Saguna worship becomes the unifying center through which the grace of Shiva is accessed.
Prioritize Liṅga worship at any holy place—offer water, bilva leaves, and recite the Pañcākṣarī mantra (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), treating the Liṅga as the core of all tīrtha-merit.
