Then, having washed the Śiva-liṅga and its pedestal with water purified by straining through cloth, one should place a flower upon the head (top) of the liṅga, accompanied by the Praṇava (Oṁ).
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Significance: Emphasizes purity (śauca) and steadiness of daily worship: cleansing the liṅga and pīṭha with filtered water preserves ritual order and supports sustained devotion.
Mantra: oṃ
Type: panchakshara
Offering: pushpa
It teaches that outer purity in worship—washing the liṅga with carefully purified water—supports inner purity, and that offering with Oṃ aligns the devotee’s mind with Pati (Śiva), the supreme Lord, in a disciplined Shaiva act of devotion.
The liṅga is the accessible, worship-worthy form of Saguna Śiva for devotees; cleansing it and adorning it with a flower expresses reverence, while chanting the Praṇava sanctifies the offering and steadies awareness on Śiva’s presence in the icon.
Perform liṅga-śuddhi and simple pūjā: wash the liṅga and pīṭha with cloth-filtered water, offer a flower to the top of the liṅga, and chant Oṃ (Praṇava) with focused attention.
