The Determination of Śiva as the Meaning of Praṇava
चत्वारो मानुषश्राद्धे सनकाद्या मुनीश्वराः । भूतश्राद्धे पंच महाभूतानि च ततः परम्
catvāro mānuṣaśrāddhe sanakādyā munīśvarāḥ | bhūtaśrāddhe paṃca mahābhūtāni ca tataḥ param
In the śrāddha offered to human ancestors, the four lordly sages beginning with Sanaka are to be contemplated as the recipients. In the bhūta-śrāddha, thereafter, the offering is made to the five great elements.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pasha
Significance: Links śrāddha to cosmic order: honoring sages (Sanakādis) and the pañca-mahābhūtas acknowledges the created matrix (māyā) within which the paśu operates.
Role: creative
Offering: naivedya
It links śrāddha to cosmic order: honoring ancestors through enlightened seers (Sanakādi) and then harmonizing one’s embodied existence by offering to the pañca-mahābhūtas, supporting purification and dharmic continuity under Shiva’s governance.
In Shaiva practice, rites like śrāddha are performed as offerings within Shiva’s manifested order (saguṇa). By sanctifying lineage and the elements, the devotee steadies the mind and body—fit supports for Linga-worship and inward devotion to Pati (Shiva).
Perform śrāddha with proper recipients in mind—Sanakādi for mānuṣa-śrāddha and the five elements for bhūta-śrāddha—while maintaining Shiva-bhakti; optionally accompany offerings with japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) to keep the rite inwardly anchored.
