ऋषय ऊचुः । सूत सूत महाभागस्त्वमस्मद्गुरुरुत्तमः । अतस्त्वां परिपृच्छामो भवतोऽनुग्रहो यदि
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ | sūta sūta mahābhāgastvamasmadgururuttamaḥ | atastvāṃ paripṛcchāmo bhavato'nugraho yadi
The sages said: “O Sūta, O Sūta—most blessed one! You are our supreme teacher. Therefore we ask you, if your gracious favor rests upon us.”

Significance: Establishes the authority-chain for sacred teaching: honoring the narrator as guru is itself a devotional act that prepares the mind for receiving Śiva-kathā as liberating instruction.

It establishes the Shaiva principle that true understanding arises through anugraha (grace) mediated by the guru-like narrator; the sages approach Sūta with humility, showing that receptivity and respectful inquiry are prerequisites for receiving Shiva-tattva teachings.
Before practices like Linga worship bear fruit, the Purana emphasizes proper transmission—hearing Shiva’s glories from an authoritative teacher. This verse frames the discourse as sacred instruction, which supports saguna devotion (bhakti) through śravaṇa and right understanding.
The implied practice is śravaṇa (devotional listening) and praśna (reverent inquiry) to a competent teacher—an essential discipline that complements mantra-japa (such as the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and other Shaiva observances.
