In this passage, the Bālakāṇḍa is chiefly governed by a triad of rasas—vīra, karuṇa, and adbhuta. It begins with Rāma’s fearless departure to protect Viśvāmitra’s yajña, and the slaying of Mārīca and Subāhu establishes vīra-rasa; yet this heroism is for the safeguarding of dharma, not for the display of ego. Thereafter, the episode of Ahalyā becomes a centre of compassion and grace: consciousness bound under a curse (Ahalyā) is revealed by the touch of the Lord’s foot-dust and rises into praise—this is a grace-centred theology of liberation. Then the description of Mithilā, fragrant with wondrous beauty and śṛṅgāra, purifies the mind, and Janaka’s sight of Rāma ripens into an upsurge of love. In principle, Tulasī shows here that Saguna līlā is the accessible manifestation of Nirguṇa Brahman itself: that very Brahman, “assuming both modes,” comes in the form of a child. Thus this section completes the Sopāna-work of the Bālakāṇḍa—through hearing to love, and from love to refuge.

At daybreak the Lord of the Raghus said to the sage, "Go and perform your sacrifice without fear." All the sages began to make the offerings into the fire, while he himself stood guard over the sacrifice. Hearing of it, the wrathful demon Maricha, enemy of the sages, rushed to the spot with his helpers. Rama struck him with a headless arrow, and he was flung a hundred yojanas, beyond the ocean. Then with an arrow of fire he slew Subahu, while his younger brother destroyed the army of the demons. Having slain the demons, he made the Brahmins free from fear, and all the gods and sages sang his praises. There the Lord of the Raghus then stayed for some days, showing kindness to the Brahmins. Out of devotion the Brahmins told him many stories from the Puranas, though the Lord knew them all already. Then the sage respectfully explained to him, "Lord, there is a spectacle you should go and see." Hearing of the sacrifice of the bow, the Lord of the Raghu clan gladly set out with the best of sages. On the way he saw a hermitage where there was no bird, no deer, nor any living creature at all. Seeing a stone there, the Lord asked the sage about it, and the sage told him the whole story in detail.

At the touch of his purifying feet, which destroy sorrow, Ahalya truly stood revealed, a very mass of austerity. Seeing Rama, the Lord of the Raghus, giver of happiness to his devotees, she stood before him with joined palms. Overcome with love, restless, her body thrilling with joy, she could not utter a word from her mouth. Supremely fortunate, she clung to his feet, and streams of tears flowed from both her eyes. She steadied her mind and recognized the Lord; by the grace of the Lord of the Raghus she had obtained devotion. In pure and flawless words she began her praise: 'Glory to you, Rama, who are to be known only through knowledge.' 'I am an impure woman, and you, Lord, are the purifier of the world; you are the foe of Ravana and the giver of joy to your devotees. O lotus-eyed one, deliverer from the fear of worldly existence, save me, save me, for I have come to you for refuge.' 'The curse the sage laid upon me was a very good deed; I count it a supreme favor. For I have seen Hari, the deliverer from rebirth, with eyes full to the brim. This is the gain that Shankara has also known.' 'This is my petition, Lord: I am foolish of mind, and I ask no other boon, O master, but this. May my mind, like a bee, drink the sweet nectar of the pollen of your lotus feet, in love and devotion.' 'From those very feet the most holy river of the gods, the Ganga, came forth, and Shiva bore her on his head. Those lotus feet, which Brahma himself worships, the merciful Hari has placed upon my head.' Thus the wife of Gautama, falling again and again at Hari's feet, departed. She received the boon that her heart most desired, and went to her husband's realm, filled with joy.

Rama and Lakshmana set out with the sage, and came to where the Ganga, purifier of the world, flows. The son of Gadhi told them the whole story of how the heavenly river came down to the earth. Then the Lord bathed together with the sages, and the Brahmans, the gods of the earth, received gifts of many kinds. Rejoicing, he went on with the company of sages as his companions, and soon drew near the city of Videha. When Rama saw the loveliness of the city, he was greatly delighted, and so was his younger brother with him. There were many step-wells, wells, rivers and lakes, whose water was like nectar, with steps made of jewels. Bees drunk with nectar hummed sweetly, and birds of many colors sang with pleasing notes. Lotuses of every color had bloomed in the water, and breezes of three kinds, cool, soft and fragrant, always gave delight.

The beauty of the city cannot be described; wherever the mind goes, there it is captivated. The bazaar is lovely, with wonderful balconies made all of jewels, as though Brahma had fashioned them with his own hands. The wealthy merchants, equal to Kubera, the god of wealth, sit with all kinds of goods spread before them. The squares are beautiful and the lanes charming, always sprinkled with fragrant waters. Everyone's house is a home of auspiciousness, and looks as though it had been painted by Kamadeva, the lord of Rati, as the painter. The men and women of the city are handsome, pure, and saintly, devout by nature, wise, and full of virtues. Where Janaka dwells, the place is utterly peerless; the gods, beholding its splendor, stand spellbound. The mind is amazed at the sight of the fortress, which seems to have taken for itself the beauty of all the worlds.

All the gates were beautiful, with doors of adamant, and crowded with kings, actors, bards and minstrels. Spacious stables were built for horses and elephants, and they were filled at all times with horses, elephants and chariots. There were very many warriors, ministers and generals, and the houses of them all were like the king's palace. Outside the city, near the pools and streams, a great many kings had encamped here and there. Seeing a matchless mango grove, pleasing in every way and convenient in every respect, Kaushika said, "My mind approves of this place. Let us stay here, wise Raghubir." "Very well, my lord," said the Lord, the abode of compassion, and he alighted there together with the company of sages. The king of Mithila received the news that the great sage Vishvamitra had come.

He reverently saluted all the company of Brahmins, and the king rejoiced, thinking his fortune great. After asking again and again after their welfare, Vishvamitra seated the king. At that very moment the two brothers arrived, who had gone to see the flower garden. One was dark and the other fair, both tender in the youth of boyhood, a delight to the eyes and stealers of the hearts of the whole world. When the Lord of the Raghus came, all rose, and Vishvamitra seated the two brothers close beside him. All were made happy at the sight of the two brothers; their eyes filled with tears and their bodies thrilled with joy. Tell me, my lord, who are these two beautiful boys. Are they the ornaments of a line of sages, or the protectors of a line of kings? Or is it the Supreme Brahman, whom the Vedas sing of with the words "not this, not this," that has come here, taking on a twofold form? My mind is by nature the very form of detachment, yet it grows entranced, like a chakor bird gazing at the moon. Therefore, my lord, I ask you for the plain truth. Tell me, master, and do not hide anything. As I look at them, a great love has risen in me, and my mind has been forcibly drawn away from the bliss of Brahman. The sage said with a smile, "You have spoken well, O king. Your words cannot be untrue." "These two are dear to every living creature, wherever they may be." Hearing these words, Rama smiled inwardly. "They are the jewels of the line of Raghu, sons of Dasharatha, whom the king has sent for my benefit."

"Listen, my lord," said Videha, glad at heart, "their natural affection is like that of Brahma and the individual soul." Again and again the king gazed at the Lord, his body thrilled and his heart full of great delight. Praising the sage and bowing his head at his feet, the lord of the earth led him to the city. There the king took him and gave him a beautiful dwelling, comfortable at all seasons. Having worshipped him and served him in every way, the king took his leave and went to his palace.

In Lakshmana's heart there was a special longing: to go and see Janakpur. But he feared the Lord, and was also shy before the sage; he did not say it aloud, but smiled to himself. Rama knew the state of his younger brother's mind, and his heart was gladdened by his tenderness toward his devotees. Very humbly, with a shy smile, he obtained his guru's leave and spoke. "Lord, Lakshmana wishes to see the city, but out of shyness and fear of you, he does not say it aloud." "If I may have your permission, I will show him the city and bring him back at once." Hearing this, the lord of sages replied with affection: "Rama, how could you not keep to the right way?" "Dear son, you are the guardian of the bridge of righteousness, and, overcome by love, you give happiness to your servants."

Bowing at the lotus feet of the sage, the two brothers, givers of delight to the eyes of the whole world, set out. Seeing their exceeding beauty, throngs of boys followed along with them, their eyes and minds filled with longing. They wore yellow garments, with a girdle at the waist and a quiver at the side, and graceful bows and arrows shone in their hands. Fine sandal-paste marks suited their bodies; the pair was enchanting, one dark and one fair. Their necks were like the lion's and their arms long; on their breasts hung most lovely garlands of serpent-gems. Their beautiful eyes were like red lotuses, and their faces, like the moon, took away the threefold affliction. Golden flowers at their ears lent them beauty, and as they glanced it seemed they stole the heart of the one they looked at. Their glance was charming and their fine eyebrows gracefully curved; the line of the tilaka on the brow seemed a mark set there to stamp their beauty.

On their comely heads were charming caps, and their hair was dark and curling. The two brothers were beautiful from the nails to the crown of the head, every part of them radiant with beauty and perfectly formed.
