Prakarana 21

The rasa-centre of the Bālakāṇḍa is vātsalya (parental tenderness), yet within it the streams of adbhuta (holy wonder) and śānta (steadfastness in tattva) flow unceasingly. In this passage, Mother Kauśalyā’s maternal love rises to its summit, and within that very love the marvellous revelation of the vision of the cosmos takes place—this is Tulasī’s distinctive doctrine of līlā: in the Saguna Infant, the Nirguṇa Infinite is directly beheld. Thereafter, the city’s ease and prosperity, Rāma’s gathering of the people (loka-saṅgraha), and Viśvāmitra’s arrival make clear the avatāra’s purpose for dharma’s work. Thus the Bālakāṇḍa teaches the seeker that the door of liberation first opens through “simplicity of heart,” and then, by entering into dharma-duty, bhakti ripens. This Kāṇḍa stands as the foundational pillar of the Manas’s union of dharma and devotion.

Thus Rama, the father and mother of the world, became a giver of joy to the dwellers of Kosalapura. Those who have held love for the feet of the Lord of the Raghus, O Bhavani, this is plainly the state they attain. Though one who turns away from the Lord of the Raghus makes ten million efforts, who can loose the bonds of worldly existence? That Maya which has brought all beings, moving and unmoving, under its sway and holds them, itself speaks of fear before the Lord. With the play of his eyebrows he makes her dance. Tell me, leaving such a Lord, whom else should one worship? Giving up cleverness in thought, deed and word, worship him, and the Lord of the Raghus will show you favor. In this way the Lord enacted the sports of a child, and gave joy to all the people of the city. Sometimes taking him on her lap she would dandle him, and sometimes laying him in the cradle she would rock him.

Once the mother bathed the child, adorned him, and laid him to sleep in his cradle. Then she bathed herself, to worship the Lord God who was the guardian deity of her own family. Having worshipped, she offered the food, and herself went to the place where the meal was being cooked. Then the mother came back to that place, and there she saw her son eating the food. Terrified, the mother went to the child, and saw the boy lying asleep there again. Coming back again, she saw her son there too. Her heart trembled and her mind could not be steadied. "Here and there I see two children. Is this a delusion of my mind, or something else extraordinary?" Seeing his mother so bewildered, the Lord Rama smiled and gave her a sweet smile.

She saw countless suns, moons, Shivas and Brahmas, and many mountains, rivers, seas, lands and forests. She saw time, action, the qualities, knowledge and natural disposition, things such as she had never heard of before. She saw Maya, dense and powerful in every way, and she stood terrified, with her hands joined. She saw the soul that Maya makes dance to her tune, and she saw devotion, which sets that soul free. Her body thrilled, and no words came to her lips; she closed her eyes and bowed her head at his feet. Seeing his mother filled with wonder, the Lord, the foe of Khara, became an infant again. She could not manage to praise him, for fear had seized her: "I had thought of the Father of the world as my son." Hari comforted his mother in many ways, saying, "Listen, mother, do not tell this to anyone anywhere."

Hari performed many kinds of childhood sports, and gave great delight to his servants. When a little time had passed, all the brothers grew bigger, giving joy to their kinsfolk. The guru came and performed the tonsure ceremony, and the Brahmans in turn received many gifts. The four tender boys went about performing endless, exceedingly charming deeds. He who is beyond the reach of mind, deed and word, that same Lord wandered in Dasharatha's courtyard. When the king called him while he was at his meal, he would not leave his band of boy companions and come. When Kausalya went to call him, the Lord would run away, toddling with little stamping steps. He whom the Vedas describe as "not this, not this," and whose end Shiva never found, his mother ran after and seized in her determination. He came with his body covered in dust, and the king laughed and seated him on his lap.

The childhood deeds of the Lord, utterly simple and charming, have been sung by Sarasvati, Shesha, Shambhu and the Vedas. Those whose minds take no delight in these deeds have been cheated of their due by the Creator. When all the brothers had grown into boyhood, the guru, their father and their mother invested them with the sacred thread. The Lord of the Raghus went to his guru's house to study, and in a short time all learning came to him. He whose natural breath is the four Vedas, that same Hari studied: this was a great sport indeed. Accomplished in learning, humility, virtue and good conduct, they played all the games that belong to the pastimes of princes. With arrow and bow in hand they looked exceedingly beautiful, and at the sight of their form all creatures, moving and unmoving, were enchanted. In whatever streets the brothers wandered, all the men and women there stood still, entranced.

He calls his brothers and friends to go with him, and goes out daily to play at hunting in the forest. Judging in his heart which deer are holy, he kills them, and every day brings them and shows them to the king. The deer that were slain by Rama's arrows gave up their bodies and departed to the world of the gods. He takes his meals together with his younger brothers and friends, and follows the commands of his mother and father. The Lord, the treasury of compassion, arranges whatever means will make the people of the city happy. He listens to the Vedas and Puranas with his mind attentive, and himself explains them to his younger brothers. Rising at dawn, Rama, the Lord of the Raghus, bows his head to his mother, his father and his guru. Having asked their leave, he attends to the affairs of the city; and the king rejoices in his heart at seeing his conduct.

All this story of the Lord's deeds I have sung. Now listen with your minds attentive to the story that follows. The great and wise sage Vishvamitra dwelt in the forest, having found a fair and auspicious hermitage. There the sages performed their prayers and sacrifices, but they were greatly afraid of Maricha and Subahu. The moment they saw a sacrifice, the demons rushed upon it and wrought havoc, and the sages suffered grief. Anxiety filled the mind of Gadhi's son: these sinful demons will not die except by Hari. Then the best of sages reflected in his mind: the Lord has taken birth to remove the burden of the earth. Under this pretext I shall go and see his feet, and by entreaty I shall bring both the brothers here. That Lord, the abode of knowledge, dispassion and every virtue, I shall behold to my heart's content with my eyes.

When the king heard of the sage's arrival, he went to meet him, taking with him a company of Brahmans. He prostrated himself, honored the sage, and brought him in and seated him on his own seat. He washed the sage's feet and worshiped him with great devotion, saying, "No one else is as blessed as I am today." He had him fed with food of many kinds, and the great sage felt exceeding joy in his heart. Then the king laid his four sons at the sage's feet, and on seeing Rama the sage forgot his own body. He was absorbed in gazing at the beauty of Rama's face, like a chakora bird longing for the full moon. Then the king, glad at heart, spoke: "O sage, you have never shown me such kindness before. What is the reason for your coming? Tell me, and I will not delay in doing it." The sage said: "Hordes of demons torment me, and I have come to you, O king, to ask a boon. Give me Rama, the Lord of the Raghus, together with his younger brother. When the demons are slain, I shall be well protected."

Hearing these most unwelcome words, the king trembled in his heart, and the radiance of his face faded. "In my old age I have obtained four sons. O Brahmin, you have spoken without thinking." "Ask for land, cows, wealth and treasure, and I will gladly give you everything I have this very day." "Nothing is dearer than the body and the breath of life, O sage, yet even that I would give in a single moment." "All my sons are as dear to me as my life, but to give up Rama, my lord, I cannot bear." "Where are the demons, so terrible and cruel, and where is my beautiful son, a mere tender boy?" Hearing the king's words steeped in the sweetness of love, the wise sage rejoiced in his heart. Then Vasishtha counselled the king at length in many ways, and the king's doubt was destroyed. With great honour he called his two sons, pressed them to his heart, and instructed them in many ways. "These two sons are my life, my lord; you, O sage, are their father, and no one else."

The king entrusted his two sons to the sage, giving them his blessings in many ways. The Lord went to his mother's palace, and then set out, bowing his head at her feet. The two heroes, lions among men, set out gladly to take away the sage's fear. They were oceans of compassion and steadfast of mind, the very cause and maker of the whole universe.

His eyes were reddish, his chest and arms broad; his body was dark blue like a lotus, dark as a tamala tree. A yellow cloth was bound about the waist, with a fine quiver fastened on, and in both hands a graceful bow and arrows. The two brothers, one dark and one fair, were beautiful; in them Vishvamitra had found a great treasure. The sage thought: "I know that the Lord is the divine protector of Brahmins. Blessed One, for my sake you have left your father." As they walked on, the sage pointed out Tadaka, and on hearing him she rushed forward in anger. With a single arrow Rama took her life; seeing her humble, he gave her a place at his own feet. Then the sage recognized his Lord in his heart, and yet gave knowledge to the treasury of all knowledge. By it neither hunger nor thirst touched them, and the brilliance of their bodies shone with incomparable strength.
