This compact sequence (Dohā 130–139) crafts a swift shift of rasa within the Bālakāṇḍa—from “māyā’s sport” to “awakening by grace.” It opens in śṛṅgāra/adbhuta: the city’s splendor, the princess’s beauty, the bustle of the svayaṁvara. Then comes hāsya and satire: Hari’s “veiled compassion” toward Nārada’s longing for beauty—granting him ugliness to shatter pride. Next rises raudra: Nārada’s anger and his curse upon the Rudra-gaṇas. Finally, śānta/karuṇa prevails: Hari removes the māyā, instructs him in japa of Śiva’s Name, and assures liberation to the Rudra-gaṇas. In dharma-meaning, the episode centers inner purification on the bhakti-path: even gods and saints may be shaken by māyā, yet the Lord’s līlā ultimately steadies the seeker in the Name, in humility, and in the oneness of Śiva and Rāma.

Beautiful men and women lived in that city, as though many Kamadevas and Ratis had taken bodily form. In that city lived a king named Shilanidhi, who had countless horses, elephants and a great host of troops. His splendor and pleasures were like those of a hundred Indras; he was the abode of beauty, majesty, strength and statecraft. His daughter was Vishvamohini, at the sight of whose beauty even Shri, the goddess Lakshmi, was bewildered. She was the very Maya of Hari, a mine of every excellence; how could her loveliness be described? That princess was holding her svayamvara, and countless kings of the earth came there. The sage, ever fond of sport, went to that city, and he asked all the townspeople what was happening. Having heard the whole account, he came to the king's palace, and the king worshipped the sage and seated him.

Seeing her beauty, the sage forgot his dispassion, and he stood gazing at her for a long while. Looking at her marks, he was bewildered; joy filled his heart, but he did not express it openly. Whoever marries her will become immortal, and no one will conquer him on the field of battle. All things, moving and unmoving, will serve the one whom the daughter of Shilanidhi chooses as her husband. He kept all the marks hidden in his heart, and to the king he said only a little, embellishing it. Telling the king that his daughter had auspicious marks, Narada departed, with anxious thoughts in his mind. "I will go and think of some device by which this maiden may choose me as her husband." "At this hour no recitation or penance will serve. O Creator, by what means shall I win this girl?"

Narada thought: "I will ask Hari for beauty. But if I go to him, brother, there will be very great delay. There is no one like Hari for my good. Let him be my helper at this moment." At that time he made many kinds of entreaty, and the playful, merciful Lord appeared before him. Seeing the Lord, the sage's eyes were cooled, and he rejoiced in heart, thinking that his task would now be accomplished. With great earnestness he told his tale and said, "Show me your favor, and be my helper. O Lord, give me your own form, for in no other way can I win her. O Master, in whatever way my good may be served, do that quickly; I am your servant." Seeing the vast power of his own Maya, the Lord, compassionate to the humble, smiled in his heart and spoke.

Listen, O sage and yogi: when a sick man, tormented by his disease, begs for unwholesome food, the physician does not give it to him. In just this way I have resolved on what is for your good. Having said this, the Lord vanished from sight. The sage, bewildered, had fallen under the power of illusion, and he did not understand the deep and hidden meaning of Hari's words. That chief of sages went at once to the place where the hall for the svayamvara had been prepared. The kings sat, each in his own seat, richly adorned, together with their retinues. The sage rejoiced in his heart, thinking: "My beauty is so great that, however deluded, she will never pass me by and choose another." For the sage's good, the Lord, the treasure of compassion, had given him such a deformed shape that it cannot be described. No one could perceive this doing of the Lord. Taking him simply for Narada, all bowed their heads to him.

The assembly in which the sage went and sat down was one where, in his heart, he took great pride in his own beauty. There the two attendants of Shiva were also seated, in the guise of Brahmins, and no one perceived their true state. They spoke with cunning words so that Narada would hear: "Hari has given him wonderful beauty. The princess will be charmed when she sees his splendor, and taking him especially to be Hari, she will choose him as her husband." The sage's mind, deluded, was in another's hands, and Shambhu's attendants laughed, taking great delight. Although the sage heard their strange, twisted words, he could not understand them, for his mind was steeped in bewilderment. No one else perceived that remarkable happening; only the king's daughter saw him in that form. With a monkey's face and a fearsome body, the sight of him filled her heart with anger.

In whatever direction Narada sat, puffed up with pride, the princess, even by mistake, would not look toward that side. Again and again the sage rose up from his seat, restless and anxious; seeing his state, the attendants of Shiva smiled. The Merciful One, having taken the form of a king, went there; and the princess joyfully placed the victory garland on him. The Lord took the bride and went to the abode of Lakshmi, and the whole assembly of kings was left in despair. The sage was greatly distraught, and his wits were lost in delusion, like a jewel fallen out when the knot of a purse has come undone. Then the attendants of Shiva said with a smile, "Go and look at your own face in a mirror." So saying, the two ran away in great fear. The sage looked into the water and saw his face. Seeing his appearance, his anger grew exceedingly great, and he laid a most terrible curse upon the two.

He looked into the water again and saw that he had regained his own form; yet no contentment came into his heart. His lips quivered, and anger filled his mind; in haste he set off toward the Lord of Lakshmi. "Either I will go and curse him, or I will go and die, for he has made me a laughingstock before the whole world." Midway on the road the slayer of the demons met him, with Rama (Lakshmi) and that same princess beside him. The Lord of the gods spoke sweet words: "Where is the sage going, so like one distraught?" Hearing these words, great anger arose in him; under the sway of illusion his mind kept no understanding. "You cannot bear to see another's prosperity; envy and deceit are especially strong in you." "At the churning of the ocean you drove Rudra mad, and, urging on the gods, made him drink the poison."

When Hari removed his illusion and drove it far away, neither Rama's consort Lakshmi nor the princess was to be seen there. Then the sage, greatly terrified, clasped the feet of Hari, crying, "Protect me, you who take away the afflictions of those who bow before you." "Let my curse be made false, O Merciful One," said the sage. The Lord, compassionate to the afflicted, said, "It is my will." The sage said, "I spoke many harsh words. How will my sins be wiped away?" The Lord said, "Go and repeat the hundred names of Shankara, and your heart will at once find rest." "No one is as dear to me as Shiva. Never, even by mistake, give up this conviction." "The one on whom Shiva, the destroyer of the cities, does not show favor, O sage, cannot win devotion to me." "Keep this in your heart and go and wander over the earth. Now illusion will no longer come near you."

The attendants of Shiva saw the sage going along the road, freed from his delusion and filled with special joy. Greatly afraid, they came to Narada, seized his feet, and spoke to him in words of distress. "We are attendants of Shiva, not Brahmans, O chief of sages. We committed a great offence and have received its fruit." "O merciful one, turn the curse into a favour." Narada, compassionate to the afflicted, replied: "Go, both of you, and become demons; may you have vast splendour, majesty and strength." "When you have conquered the world by the might of your arms, then Vishnu will take a human body." "Dying in battle at the hands of Hari, you will attain liberation, and will not be born again into the world." The two bowed their heads at the sage's feet and departed, and when the time came they were born as demons.

In one age, for this reason, the Lord took birth as a human being: Hari, who delights the gods, gives joy to the good, and removes the burden of the earth.
