In this section the main current of rasa is śānta and adbhuta, with a subtle understream of karuṇa. Umā’s removal of delusion (“moh is dispelled”) signals the diminishing of the seeker’s inner darkness—listening to the kathā itself becomes sādhana. Śaṅkara appears here as Guru: he calls Rāma “Brahman—pure Consciousness, imperishable,” establishing nirguṇa Truth; and then explains that the same Brahman assumes human form—saguṇa līlā—for the devotee’s good and the protection of dharma. The ensuing Purāṇic links—Jaya-Vijaya, Jalandhara-Rāvaṇa, the Nārada episode—make the cause of avatāra multi-layered: karma and its fruit, curse and boon, and the justice of līlā. In this way, this portion of Bālakāṇḍa establishes together both “kathā-pramāṇa” (in accord with Veda and Purāṇa) and “bhakti-pramāṇa” (crossing saṁsāra through hearing the Name and qualities)—a doorway into the Manas’ theology.

Hearing your words, cool as the rays of the moon, my great delusion, like the heavy heat of autumn, has vanished. You, the compassionate, have removed every doubt, and now I have come to know the true nature of Rama. Lord, by your grace my sorrow is gone, and by the favor of your feet I am happy. Now regard me as your own handmaid, though I am by nature a dull and ignorant woman. If you, my lord, are pleased with me, then answer what I first asked. Rama is Brahma, pure consciousness, imperishable, free from every attribute, and dwelling in the city of every heart. Lord, for what reason did he assume a human body? Explain this to me, O Lord whose banner bears the bull. Hearing the words of Uma, so utterly humble, and her pure love for the story of Rama,

Then Shankara, the foe of Kama, who is wise by nature, rejoiced in his heart. Praising Uma in many ways, the Lord, the storehouse of compassion, spoke again. Listen, Bhavani, to the auspicious tale of the pure Ramcharitmanas, which Bhushundi told in full and which Garuda, the king of birds, heard. I will tell later how that noble dialogue came about. For now listen to the incarnation of Rama and his deeds, supremely beautiful and sinless. The virtues and names of Hari are endless, and his stories and forms are countless and immeasurable. I will tell them according to my own understanding; listen with reverence, Uma.

Listen, Girija: the stories of Hari's deeds are lovely, vast and pure, and the Vedas and the Agamas have sung them. The cause of Hari's incarnation cannot be stated with the assurance of saying "it is just so and no other." Rama is beyond the reach of reasoning, of intellect, of mind and of speech. Such is my opinion; hear it, wise lady. Even so, whatever the saints, the sages, the Vedas and the Puranas have said, each according to his own understanding and inference, so, fair-faced one, I will tell it to you, as the cause appears to me on reflection. Whenever righteousness declines, and base and proud demons multiply, and commit injustice beyond description, and the Brahmans, the cows, the gods and the earth are oppressed, then each time the Lord, the treasury of mercy, assumes various bodies and removes the sufferings of the good.

Singing that very glory, the devotees cross over the ocean of worldly existence; the ocean of compassion takes on a body for the good of his servants. The reasons for Rama's births are many, each more wondrous than the one before. I will describe one or two of those births in detail; listen attentively, O wise Bhavani. Hari had two dear doorkeepers, Jaya and Vijaya, known to everyone. By a Brahmin's curse both brothers took on the bodies of demons, full of darkness and passion. They were Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha, famed throughout the world as breakers of the pride of the lord of the gods. Both were conquerors in battle and renowned heroes; assuming the form of a boar, the Lord slew one of them. Then, becoming the Man-lion, he killed the other, and spread abroad the good fame of his servant Prahlada.

Though the Lord slew them, they were not liberated, for the Brahmin's word, that they must take three births, had to be fulfilled. Once, for their sake, the Lord, who loves his devotees, took a bodily form. There Kashyapa and Aditi were his father and mother, renowned as Dasharatha and Kausalya. In one kalpa the incarnation took place in this way, and his sacred deeds made the world pure. In another kalpa the gods, seeing themselves distressed, fought against Jalandhara and were all defeated. Shambhu waged boundless war, but the mighty demon could not be killed, though he was struck. The wife of that lord of the demons was supremely chaste; by the strength of her virtue, the Destroyer of the Cities could not conquer him.

Hari, the gracious Lord God, who is a treasure of sport, accepted her curse and made it true. There Jalandhara was born as Ravana, and Rama, having slain him in battle, granted him the supreme state. This is the reason for one birth, for which Rama took a human body. Listen, sage: the poets have told many tales of the Lord for each of his incarnations. Once Narada cursed him, and for that reason there was an incarnation in one cycle of the world. Girija was astonished at hearing these words: Narada is a devotee of Vishnu, and a wise one besides. For what reason did the sage utter a curse? What offence had the Lord of Lakshmi (Vishnu) committed? Tell me this episode, O Slayer of Pura: that the sage's mind was deluded is a great wonder.

In the Himalaya there was a cave, exceedingly holy, and near it flowed the lovely river of the gods, the Ganga. The hermitage was supremely pure and beautiful, and the divine sage Narada was greatly delighted at the sight of it. As he gazed at the mountains, the river and the different parts of the forest, love arose in him for the feet of Vishnu, the husband of Rama (Lakshmi). As he remembered Hari, the curse's hold was checked, and his mind, naturally pure, fell into trance. Seeing the sage's state, Indra, the lord of the gods, was afraid; he called Kama and received him with honor. "Go, with your helpers, for my sake." Hearing this, the god of love, whose banner bears the fish, was astonished, and glad in his heart. Such was the dread in Indra's mind: "The divine sage wants to take up his dwelling in my city." Those in the world who are lustful and greedy are afraid of everyone, like the crafty crow.

When Kama, the god of love, came to that hermitage, he created a spring by his own illusive power. Trees of many kinds and many colors burst into bloom; cuckoos sang and bees hummed. A delightful breeze, cool, soft and fragrant, began to blow, fanning the fire of desire. Rambha and other young heavenly women, all of them skilled in the arts of the god of the five arrows, sang songs with many waves of melody, and played in many ways, their hands moving like fluttering kites. Seeing his helpers, Kama was delighted, and then he practiced many kinds of tricks. But none of Kama's arts had any effect on the sage, and the sinful god of the mind trembled with fear for himself. Can anyone trample on the bounds of one whose great guardian is Ramapati, the Lord of Lakshmi?

No anger arose in Narada's mind; he spoke kind words and comforted Kama. Bowing his head at the sage's feet and taking his leave, Madana then departed with his companions. He went to the court of Indra, the lord of the gods, and described it all: the sage's great gentleness and his own deed. Hearing it, everyone was filled with wonder; they praised the sage and bowed their heads to Hari. Then Narada went to Shiva, with the conceit in his mind that he had conquered Kama. He told Shankara the whole story of Kama's attempt; and Mahesha, knowing him to be very dear, gave him instruction. "Again and again I entreat you, sage: the story that you have told me just now, never tell it so to Hari. Even if the subject should come up, keep it hidden then."

Whatever Rama wishes to be done, that alone comes to pass; no one can make it otherwise. Shambhu's words did not please the sage's mind, and so he set out for the realm of Brahma. Once, holding his fine lute in his hand and skilled in singing the praises of Hari, the lord of sages went to the Ocean of Milk, where dwells Shrinivasa, the crown of the Vedas. The Lord, the abode of Rama, rose and met him with joy, and sat down on a seat together with the sage. The King of all things moving and unmoving said with a smile, "Sage, after many days you have shown me this kindness." Narada related the whole story of Kama's doings, although Shiva had earlier forbidden him and held him back. The illusion of the Lord of the Raghus is exceedingly mighty; who born in the world is there that it does not delude?

Listen, sage: delusion arises in the mind of one in whose heart there is no knowledge and no dispassion. You are devoted to the vow of celibacy and steadfast in mind; how could the pain of love trouble you? Narada replied with pride, "Lord, it is all by your grace." The Lord, the treasury of compassion, looked into his mind and saw that a great tree of pride had sprouted in his heart. "I will quickly pull it up by the roots; it is my vow to do good to my servants." "For the sage's good I will make some sport; I will surely devise a means to do it." Then Narada bowed his head at Hari's feet and departed, with a swelling sense of self-importance in his heart. Then the Lord of Lakshmi sent forth his own Maya. Listen to the hard, strange deeds of hers.

On the road he created a city a hundred yojanas in extent, and its construction, of many kinds, was finer even than the city of Shrinivasa.
