In this passage karuṇā-rasa is predominant, yet it is not mere grief—it is compassion disciplined by dharma-awareness. Bharata’s cry of “Tāt! Tāt!” reveals a son’s helpless heart; Kaikeyī’s line—“scraping the wound as though pouring poison”—gives psychological cruelty a sharp metaphor. Thereafter Kauśalyā’s motherhood transforms compassion into peace: her counsel, “Hold fast to patience,” turns karuṇā toward śānta. Here Tulasīdāsa converts “līlā” (Rāma’s forest-exile) into “sādhana” (obedience, vairāgya, the dharma of the world). Bharata’s vow-like speech (reckoning of sins) becomes a test of self-purification: he binds his own mind publicly into a dhārmic pledge. Thus this section becomes, in the staircase-order, a rung from “viraha to viveka” and from “grief to śaraṇāgati.”

"My son, I had arranged everything, and poor Manthara became my helper. But Fate spoiled the business partway: the king has set his foot in the city of Indra, the lord of the gods." On hearing this Bharata was overcome with grief, like an elephant terrified at the roar of a lion. Crying out "Father, father, alas, my father!" he fell upon the ground, greatly distraught. "I was not able to see you as you departed, father, and you did not entrust me to Rama." Then, gathering his courage, he steadied himself and rose, and said, "Mother, tell me the cause of my father's death." Hearing her son's words, Kaikeyi answered like one who probes a wound and pours poison into it. Cunning and hard of heart, she described with a glad mind all her own doings, from the very beginning.

Seeing her son distraught, she tried to console him, yet it was as if she were rubbing salt on a burn. "My son, the king is not a fit object of grief. He amassed great merit and renown, and then enjoyed the fruits of them." "In his lifetime he gained every fruit of birth, and at the end he departed to the abode of the lord of the immortals." "Considering this, put aside your grief, and rule the kingdom and the city together with all your people." Hearing this, the prince shrank back in great dread, as though a live coal had been laid on a festering sore. Gathering his courage, he drew a deep sigh: "Sinful woman, you have destroyed the whole family in every way." "If you had such a great wickedness in your heart, why did you not kill me at my very birth?" "You cut down the tree and then water its branches; you drain the pond dry and then try to keep the fish alive."

From the moment you set your evil design, your wicked counsel, in your mind, why did your heart not break into pieces? As you asked for the boons, your mind felt no pain, your tongue did not burn away, and no worms fell into your mouth. How did the king come to trust you? The hour of his death had come, and God had taken away his understanding. Even Brahma has not understood the workings of a woman's heart, which is a mine of all deceit, sin and vice. The king was simple, gentle and devoted to righteousness; how could he know the nature of a woman? Is there any creature in the world to whom Rama, the Lord of the Raghus, is not dear as life? Yet even he has become your bitter enemy. Who are you? Tell me the truth. Whatever you are, you are, but you have smeared your face with soot. Rise, go and sit out of my sight.

When Shatrughna heard of his mother's wickedness, his whole body burned, and in his anger he could not restrain himself. At that moment the hunchback Kubari came there, adorned with clothes and ornaments of many kinds. At the sight of her, Lakshmana's younger brother was filled with rage, like a fire blazing up when it receives an offering of ghee. He sprang forward, took aim, and struck a kick at her hump; she fell flat on her face on the ground, crying out. Her hump was broken and her head split open, her teeth were smashed, and blood streamed from her mouth. "Ah, God! What harm have I done? I did good, and this is the fruit I have received, an evil one." Hearing this, Shatrughna looked at her, wicked from her nails to the crown of her head, and began to drag her about, seizing her again and again by the hair. Bharata, the storehouse of compassion, got her freed, and then the two brothers went to Kausalya.

At the sight Bharata was greatly distressed; forgetting the state of his own body, he fell at her feet. "Mother, show me my father. Where are Sita, and the two brothers Rama and Lakshmana? Why was Kaikeyi born into the world? Or if she was born, why was she not barren? She bore me, a stain upon the family, a vessel of disgrace, a traitor to those dear to me. Who in the three worlds is as unfortunate as I am, because of whom, mother, you have come to such a plight? In her simple and guileless nature the mother took Bharata to her heart with such deep love that it seemed Rama himself had come back. Then she embraced Lakshmana's younger brother also, and sorrow and affection could not be contained in her heart. Seeing her nature, everyone said: "Why should she not be so? She is Rama's mother." The mother seated Bharata in her lap, wiped away his tears, and spoke gentle words. "Even now, my child, I beg you, take courage. Understand that the time is evil, and give up your grief. Do not grieve in your heart over loss and remorse, knowing that the course of time and fate cannot be altered. Do not lay blame on anyone, my son. The Creator has turned against me in every way. He who has kept me alive even through such sorrow, who knows even now what pleases him?"

His face was serene, and his mind showed no trace of anger or passion; he comforted everyone in every way. When Sita heard that he was going to the forest, she went along with him; devoted to Rama's feet, she could not stay behind. As soon as Lakshmana heard, he rose and went with them; though the Lord of the Raghus tried every means, he would not stay. Then Rama bowed his head to them all, and set out with Sita and his younger brother. Rama, Lakshmana and Sita departed for the forest. I did not go with them, nor did I send my life-breath after them. All this happened before these very eyes, and yet my luckless life did not leave my body. I feel no shame, even when I look upon my own love, I who am the mother of a son like Rama. The king knew well how to live and how to die; my heart is hard as a hundred thunderbolts.

The two brothers, Bharata and Shatrughna, wept in distress, and Kausalya took them to her heart and embraced them. In many ways she consoled Bharata, speaking to him words full of wisdom. All the mothers also comforted Bharata, recounting lovely tales from the Puranas and the Vedas. Free from all guile, pure and simple were the fair words Bharata spoke, with his two hands joined. The sins that come from slaying mother, father or son, from burning a cow-pen with its cattle, or a city of Brahmans, the sins that come from killing a woman or a child, or from giving poison to a friend or a king, all the great sins and lesser sins that exist, which the poets declare to arise from deed, word and thought, may all those sins be mine, O Creator, if this was my counsel, mother.

Rama is dearer to you than your very life, and you are dearer to Rama, the Lord of the Raghus, than his own life. The moon might rain down poison, and snow might give out fire; a creature of the water might become indifferent to water. Even when knowledge has dawned, delusion might still not be dispelled; but you could never turn against Rama. Those who say in the world that this was your plan will never gain happiness or a good destiny, even in a dream. So saying, his mother clasped Bharata to her heart; milk flowed from her breasts and her eyes filled with tears. While they lamented in this way at great length, sitting there, the whole night passed. Then Vamadeva and Vasishtha came, and summoned all the ministers and the leading citizens. The sage instructed Bharata in many ways, speaking excellent words about the highest truth.

"Child, hold steady in your heart, and do what the occasion requires today." Hearing the guru's words, Bharata rose and gave orders for all the preparations to be made.
