त्र्यशीतितमः सर्गः (Sarga 83) — Hanumān Reports Sītā’s ‘Slaying’; Rāma Collapses; Lakṣmaṇa’s Counter-Discourse on Dharma and Artha
आसिञ्चन् सलिलैश्चैनंपद्मोत्पलसुगन्धिभिः ।प्रदहन्तमानासाद्यंसहसाग्निमिवोद्यतम् ।।6.83.12।।
āsiñcan salilaiś cainaṃ padmotpala-sugandhibhiḥ | pradahantam anāsādyaṃ sahasāgnim ivodyatam ||
Reaching him, they sprinkled him with waters fragrant with lotus and lily, like dousing a suddenly flaring, blazing fire that cannot be approached.
Reaching Rama, who was like a burning fire that has risen up and suddenly fallen, the Vanaras sprinkled water with fragrance of lotuses and lilies on Rama just as sprinkling water on an inextinguishable fire that has flared up suddenly.
Care for the afflicted is dharma: the community responds to suffering with soothing, respectful service rather than panic or neglect.
The Vānara chiefs attempt to revive and calm Rāma by sprinkling him with fragrant water.
