सीताभर्त्सना — The Ogresses’ Threats to Sita and Her Vow of Fidelity
मानुषी मानुषस्यैव भार्यात्वं बहुमन्यसे।प्रत्याहर मनो रामान्न त्वं जातु भविष्यसि।।5.24.3।।
mānuṣī mānuṣasyaiva bhāryātvaṃ bahumanyase |
pratyāhara mano rāmān na tvaṃ jātu bhaviṣyasi || 5.24.3 ||
You are but a human woman, yet you prize being the wife of a mere human. Turn your mind away from Rāma—otherwise you will not live.
'You are a woman, wife of Rama, an ordinary mortal you are holding in high esteem. Withdraw your mind from Rama or else you will not survive.
It attacks dharma by belittling marital fidelity as ‘mere human’ and backing the demand with a death threat; the Ramayana treats steadfast fidelity and truth as higher than fear of death.
The rākṣasīs attempt to sever Sītā’s emotional bond to Rāma through ridicule and intimidation.
Constancy (niṣṭhā): Sītā’s unwavering devotion to her dharmic marriage despite threats.
