सीताभर्त्सना — The Ogresses’ Threats to Sita and Her Vow of Fidelity

ततस्तां विनता नाम राक्षसी भीमदर्शना।।5.24.20।।अब्रवीत्कुपिताकारा कराला निर्णतोदरी।

tatas tāṃ vinatā nāma rākṣasī bhīma-darśanā ॥5.24.20॥

abravīt kupitākārā karālā nirṇatodarī ।

Then a rākṣasī named Vinatā, frightful to behold—grim and dreadful, with a sunken belly and a face twisted in anger—spoke.

Then a dark ogress called Vinata with a terryfying look, loathsome appearance and a large sunken belly said to Sita:

S
Sītā
V
Vinatā (rākṣasī)

The narrative sets up how intimidation is personified; dharma is tested when fearsome agents attempt to bend truth through terror.

A particular guard, Vinatā, is introduced and begins addressing Sītā directly.

Sītā’s continued resolve is implied as the threats become more personalized and severe.
