Shloka 5.1.150

समुद्रलङ्घनारम्भः — Commencement of the Ocean-Crossing

evam uktā tu sā devī daivatair abhisatkṛtā | samudramadhye surasā bibhratī rākṣasaṁ vapuḥ || (5.1.149) vikṛtaṁ ca virūpaṁ ca sarvasya ca bhayāvaham | plavamānaṁ hanūmantam āvṛtya idam uvāca ha || (5.1.150)

Thus addressed and honored by the gods, Surasā stood in the ocean with a terrifying, misshapen rākṣasa body; and, surrounding Hanumān mid-flight, she addressed him.

Thus honoured by the gods, Surasa assumed a terrific ugly form frightening to all and stood in the midst of the ocean. Putting up a distorted appearance and encompassing Hanuman who was crossing the ocean, she spoke to him:

S
Surasā
G
Gods (Devas)
O
Ocean (Samudra/Sāgara)
H
Hanuman

Dharma remains stable even when challenges recur; repetition of trials does not justify abandoning righteous resolve.

A repeated transmission of Surasā’s appearance and her interception of Hanuman is preserved in this recension.

Hanuman’s readiness to meet sudden opposition without losing composure.
