समुद्रलङ्घनारम्भः — Commencement of the Ocean-Crossing
ततः क्रुद्धः सहस्राक्षः पर्वतानां शतक्रतुः।पक्षान् चिच्छेद वज्रेण तत्र तत्र सहस्रशः।।।।
tataḥ kruddhaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ parvatānāṃ śatakratuḥ | pakṣān ciccheda vajreṇa tatra tatra sahasraśaḥ ||
Then the thousand-eyed Indra—Śatakratu—angered by this, cut off the mountains’ wings with his thunderbolt, in countless places, again and again.
"Provoked at this, the thousand-eyed Indra who had performed a hundred sacrifices cut off the wings of mountains into a thousands pieces with his thunderbolt.
Governance for stability: when the world is endangered, authority acts to restore order—ideally to protect the many (loka-saṅgraha).
Maināka recounts Indra’s intervention: he removes the mountains’ wings with the vajra to end the threat their movement posed.
Indra’s role as cosmic regulator—decisive action taken to preserve the safety of gods and beings.
