जनककुलवर्णनम् तथा सीतोर्मिलादानम् (Janaka’s Genealogy and the Bestowal of Sita and Urmila)
महारोम्णस्तु धर्मात्मा स्वर्णरोमा व्यजायत।स्वर्णरोम्णस्तु राजर्षेर्ह्रस्वरोमा व्यजायत।।।।
mahāromṇas tu dharmātmā svarṇaromā vyajāyata |
svarṇaromṇas tu rājarṣer hrasvaromā vyajāyata ||
From Mahāromā was born the righteous Swarnaromā; and from Swarnaromā, that royal seer, was born Hrasvaromā.
To Maharoma's was born the virtuous Swarnaroma. Swarnaroma's son was Hrasvaroma.
Dharma is presented as a hereditary ideal in kingship: the lineage is remembered not merely by names but by the quality of being dharmātmā (righteous-minded), implying that rightful rule is grounded in righteousness.
Janaka begins recounting his dynasty to Vasiṣṭha as part of the formal duty of stating one’s lineage at the time of giving daughters in marriage.
Righteousness (dharmātmā)—the moral stature expected of royal ancestors and, by extension, of the present giver of the bride.
