विश्वामित्रस्य तपोविघ्नः, मेनकाप्रसङ्गः, महर्षिपदप्रदानम् (Visvamitra’s Austerity Obstructed; Menaka Episode; Conferment of Maharshi Status)
पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे तु व्रतस्नातं महामुनिम्।अभ्यागच्छन् सुरास्सर्वे तप: फलचिकीर्षव:।।।।
pūrṇe varṣa-sahasre tu vrata-snātaṃ mahā-munim | abhyāgacchan surāḥ sarve tapaḥ-phala-cikīrṣavaḥ ||
When a thousand years were completed, and the great sage had taken the concluding bath of his vow, all the gods approached him, wishing to confer upon him the fruits of his austerity.
All the gods wanted to bestow the fruits of austerties on the mighty ascetic (Viswamitra). They approached him after a thousand years of penace and his final ritual bath.
Dharma here is the moral law of tapas bearing fruit: disciplined effort, completed with proper ritual closure, is acknowledged and rewarded—showing the link between right practice and rightful result.
After long austerity and the vow-ending bath, Viśvāmitra draws the attention of the gods, who come to grant him spiritual fruits.
Viśvāmitra’s virtue is steadfast endurance and completion of vows—spiritual discipline sustained over immense time.
