त्रिशङ्कुस्वर्गारोহণम् — Trishanku’s Bodily Ascent and the New Constellations
सशरीरस्य भद्रं वस्त्रिशङ्कोरस्य भूपते:।आरोहणं प्रतिज्ञाय नानृतं कर्तुमुत्सहे।।।।
saśarīrasya bhadraṁ vas triśaṅkor asya bhūpateḥ |
ārohaṇaṁ pratijñāya nānṛtaṁ kartum utsahe || 1.60.27 ||
May welfare be yours. Having promised this king Triśaṅku ascent to heaven in his very body, I cannot bring myself to make my word false.
"I wish you well! Having promised king Trisanku ascent to heaven with his physical form, I do not wish to go back on my word.
Satya (truthfulness) and fidelity to one’s vow are treated as paramount; violating a promise is adharma even when pressured by higher powers.
Viśvāmitra explains that he is acting to keep his promise to Triśaṅku, despite objections based on eligibility.
