सगरपुत्राणां रसातलगमनम् — The Descent of Sagara’s Sons and the Wrath of Kapila

ततो भित्वा महीं सर्वे कृत्वा चाभिप्रदक्षिणम्।।।।सहिता स्सगरास्सर्वे पितरं वाक्यमब्रुवन्।0

tato bhitvā mahīṁ sarve kṛtvā cābhipradakṣiṇam | sahitāḥ sagarāḥ sarve pitaraṁ vākyam abruvan ||

Then, after rending the earth and making a reverential circumambulation, all the sons of Sagara together addressed their father with these words.

Afterwards, all the sons of Sagara, having riven the earth approached their father and circumamulating him said:

S
Sagara
S
sons of Sagara

Even after harsh deeds, social and familial order (maryādā) is maintained through respect to elders; circumambulation signifies acknowledgment of authority and duty toward one’s father/king.

Having searched by digging up the earth, Sagara’s sons return and formally approach their father to report the outcome.

Observance of protocol and respect (vinaya) toward an elder, shown by the act of circumambulation before speaking.
