बालकाण्ड सर्ग ३६ — गङ्गा-प्रभवप्रश्नः, शिवतेजोधारणं, कार्त्तिकेय-जन्म, उमाशापः
यस्मान्निवारिता चैव सङ्गति: पुत्रकाम्यया।अपत्यं स्वेषु दारेषु तस्मान्नोत्पादयिष्यथ।।1.36.21।।
yasmān nivāritā caiva saṅgatiḥ putrakāmyayā |
apatyaṁ sveṣu dāreṣu tasmān notpādayiṣyatha ||
Because my union—sought with the longing for a son—was obstructed, therefore you shall not beget offspring through your own wives.
Dharma as reciprocity of action and result (karma-phala): interference in another’s rightful aim leads to loss in one’s own sphere.
Umā pronounces the specific content of her curse: the Devas will be unable to have children through their wives.
Firmness in enforcing consequence—Umā acts as a guarantor of moral order as she understands it.
