भरद्वाजाश्रमे भरतसैन्यस्य दिव्यात्मिथ्यम् / Divine Hospitality to Bharata’s Army at Bharadvaja’s Hermitage
नैवायोध्यां गमिष्यामो नगमिष्याम दण्डकान्।कुशलं भरतस्यास्तु रामस्यास्तु तथा सुखम्।।।।
naivāyodhyāṃ gamiṣyāmo na gamiṣyāma daṇḍakān |
kuśalaṃ bharatasyāstu rāmasyāstu tathā sukham ||
“We will not go back to Ayodhyā, nor will we go on to Daṇḍaka. Let Bharata fare well—and let Rāma likewise be happy.”
We will neither return to Ayodhya, nor enter Dandaka (forest). May Bharata and Rama be happy.
It illustrates a lapse of dharma: abandoning one’s assigned duty and chain of command under intoxication, even while uttering polite wishes.
The soldiers, overwhelmed by pleasure, declare they will go neither to Ayodhyā nor to the forest—speaking irresponsibly after the feast.
The passage emphasizes (by negative example) steadfastness and obedience to rightful purpose—virtues undermined when judgment is clouded.
