एकोनपञ्चाशः सर्गः (Sarga 49): Rāma’s Night Journey Beyond Kosala and the Charioteer Address
नात्यर्थमभिकाङ्क्षामि मृगयां सरयूवने।रतिर्ह्येषातुला लोके राजर्षिगणसम्मता।।।।
sūta ity eva cābhāṣya sārathiṁ tam abhīkṣṇaśaḥ | haṁsamattasvaraḥ śrīmān uvāca puruṣarṣabhaḥ ||
Saying only, “Charioteer,” he addressed that driver again and again; then the illustrious best of men, whose voice was like that of an intoxicated swan, spoke.
In this world, hunting is a unique pleasure. It is regarded as a delightful sport forroyal sages. But I do not have a great longing for hunting in the forest on the bank of river Sarayu.
Dharma in communication: Rama’s respectful address to his charioteer models dignified speech and proper conduct toward attendants, consistent with maryādā (propriety).
The narration transitions into Rama’s spoken reflection; he repeatedly calls to the charioteer to speak.
Gentleness and courtesy—Rama’s manner of speech is portrayed as sweet and controlled.
