लोकसमुत्पत्ति-वर्णनम् तथा इक्ष्वाकुवंश-प्रशंसा (Cosmogony and Ikshvaku Genealogy as Counsel to Rama)
सपत्न्या तु गरस्तस्यै दत्तो गर्भजिघांसया।गरेण सह तेनैव जात स्स सगरोऽभवत्।।।।
sapatnyā tu garas tasyai datto garbha-jighāṁsayā |
gareṇa saha tenaiva jātaḥ sa sagaro ’bhavat ||
But her co-wife, intent on destroying the embryo, gave her a poison. Born together with that ‘gara’ (poison), the child came to be known as Sagara.
With a motive to destroy the embryo her co-wife had poisoned her. That child was born with gara or poison for which he was called Sagara.
It condemns adharma rooted in envy: harming another’s pregnancy out of rivalry violates truth, compassion, and household dharma.
A dynastic anecdote explains Sagara’s birth circumstances and the etymology of his name from the poison (gara) involved.
By contrast, the vice emphasized is jealousy leading to violence; the narrative implicitly upholds non-harm (ahiṁsā) as a dharmic standard.
