Then, after advancing about a krośa, the two beheld Kabandha—huge, cruel, and terrifying, trunk-like in form, with the space encircled by his arms, and of a most dreadful appearance.

Then the brothers after covering one krosa (2 miles) saw a cruel, fierce, mighty monster named Kabandha looking like a trunk. He had a dreadful appearance and his arms encircled the area.

The verse underscores vigilance and discernment: Dharma requires recognizing threats clearly, not denying them, so that righteous action can be taken.

Rama and Lakshmana draw near and finally see Kabandha’s monstrous form at close range.

Prudent awareness (jāgratā) paired with courage—seeing danger as it is, without panic.
