सीतावियोगे रामस्य विलापः — Rama’s Lament and Inquiry on Sita’s Disappearance
सीतानिमित्तं सौमित्रे मृते मयि गते त्वयि।कच्चित्सकामा सुखिता कैकेयी सा भविष्यति।।।।
sītā-nimittaṃ saumitre mṛte mayi gate tvayi |
kaccit sakāmā sukhitā kaikeyī sā bhaviṣyati ||
O Saumitri, if I die because of Sītā and you return, will that Kaikeyī—with her wish fulfilled—indeed live content and happy?
O Saumitri! when I am dead on account of Sita, and you are back, Kaikeyi with her desire fulfilled will be happy, indeed.
It warns about kama (self-serving desire) opposed to Dharma: Rama questions whether happiness built on another’s ruin can be real or righteous.
In grief, Rama imagines his own death and the aftermath at Ayodhya, especially Kaikeyi’s reaction if her political aim is achieved.
Moral reflection amid suffering—Rama evaluates not only his pain but the ethical texture of others’ motives and outcomes.
