Shloka 3.45.27
सीतया लक्ष्मणप्रेषणम् — Sita urges Lakshmana to seek Rama (The crisis of the ‘distressed voice’)
इत्युक्तः परुषं वाक्यं सीतया रोमहर्षणम्।।3.45.27।।अब्रवील्लक्ष्मणस्सीतां प्राञ्जलिर्विजितेन्द्रियः।
ityuktaḥ paruṣaṃ vākyaṃ sītayā romaharṣaṇam |
abravīllakṣmaṇaḥ sītāṃ prāñjalirvijitendriyaḥ ||
Addressed thus by Sītā with harsh words that caused horripilation, the self-controlled Lakṣmaṇa, with folded palms, spoke to Sītā.
The self-controlled Lakshmana with folded palms replied to Sita's harsh, horripilating words:
Despite Sita's shocking and unjust accusations regarding his intentions towards her, Lakshmana maintains his composure. He does not retaliate with anger but responds with respect (folded hands), demonstrating immense control over his senses and adherence to Dharma.
The term translates to 'causing horripilation' or hair-raising. It signifies that Sita's words were so unexpectedly cruel and contrary to the truth that they caused a physical reaction of shock and horror in Lakshmana.
