Shloka 3.45.16
सीतया लक्ष्मणप्रेषणम् — Sita urges Lakshmana to seek Rama (The crisis of the ‘distressed voice’)
न च तस्य स्वरो व्यक्तं मायया केन चित्कृतः।गन्धर्वनगरप्रख्या माया सा तस्य रक्षसः।।3.45.16।।
nyāsabhūtāsi vaidehi nyastā mayi mahātmanā | rāmeṇa tvaṁ varārohe na tvāṁ tyaktum ihotsahe ||3.45.17||
O Vaidehī, O fair-hipped lady, the great-souled Rāma has entrusted you to me as a sacred charge; I cannot bring myself to abandon you here.
Surely it is not his voice. It is contrived by some one's illusory power. It is the illusion created by that demon, like the city of the gandharvas. (which does not exist.)
Dharma as trust (nyāsa): when one is entrusted with another’s safety, fidelity to that charge becomes a primary moral obligation, not to be overridden by emotion or pressure.
Lakṣmaṇa explains that Rāma has explicitly placed Sītā under his protection, so he refuses to leave her.
