मायामृगदर्शनम् (The Vision of the Illusory Deer)
प्रदक्षिणेनातिबलेन पक्षिणा जटायुषा बुद्धिमता च लक्ष्मण।भवाप्रमत्तः परिगृह्य मैथिलीं प्रतिक्षणं सर्वत एव शङ्कितः।।।।
pradakṣiṇenātibalena pakṣiṇā jaṭāyuṣā buddhimatā ca lakṣmaṇa | bhavāpramattaḥ parigṛhya maithilīṃ pratikṣaṇaṃ sarvata eva śaṅkitaḥ ||
O Lakṣmaṇa, guard Maithilī without negligence—suspecting danger at every moment from every direction—and rely also on Jaṭāyu, the mighty and wise bird who keeps watch on his rounds.
O Lakshmana, be vigilant in guarding Sita, suspecting danger every moment from all directions. Take the help of Jatayu, the mighty and wise bird who will be on his rounds.ityāṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē tricatvāriṅśassargaḥ৷৷Thus ends the fortythird sarga in Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
Dharma in protection requires continuous vigilance and prudent cooperation—anticipating threats and accepting help from capable allies.
As Rāma departs after the deer, he intensifies his instructions: Lakṣmaṇa must guard Sītā constantly, aided by Jaṭāyu’s watch.
Prudence (śaṅkā with discernment) and steadfast duty: being alert ‘every moment’ is presented as the protector’s virtue.
