The Explanation of Sandhyā and Related Daily Observances
Saṅdhyā-ādi Nitya-karma-Vidhi
गुरुपङिक्तं च सन्तर्प्य साङ्गं सावरणं तथा । सायुधं वैनतेयं सन्तर्पयामीति तर्पयेत् ॥ ७५ ॥
gurupaṅiktaṃ ca santarpya sāṅgaṃ sāvaraṇaṃ tathā | sāyudhaṃ vainateyaṃ santarpayāmīti tarpayet || 75 ||
Having also satisfied, by the rite of tarpaṇa, the line of teachers (guru-paṅkti)—together with their associated parts, their retinue, and even their weapons—one should offer the libation, saying: “I satisfy Vainateya (Garuḍa).”
Narada (in instruction-mode within the Vedanga/ritual section; traditionally relayed in dialogue context with the Sanatkumara tradition)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: bhakti
It teaches that tarpaṇa is not only for a single deity-name but is done with completeness—honoring the guru lineage and also the deity’s associated retinue and attributes—so the act becomes orderly, reverential, and spiritually whole.
Bhakti is shown as disciplined devotion: one remembers and satisfies the guru-paramparā (source of transmitted knowledge) and venerates Vainateya (Garuḍa), a foremost servant associated with Viṣṇu, reinforcing devotion through proper ritual remembrance.
Ritual precision—using a stated formula (“santarpayāmi”) and sequencing offerings (guru-lineage first, then the specified divine being)—reflects Vedāṅga-oriented procedural correctness in mantra-usage and rite-structure.
