Matsya Purana — Vrata-Ṣaṣṭhī: The Sixty Sacred Vows
सम्पूज्य विप्रमिथुनं गौरी मे प्रीयतामिति एतद्गौरीव्रतं नाम भवानीलोकदायकम् //
sampūjya vipramithunaṃ gaurī me prīyatāmiti etadgaurīvrataṃ nāma bhavānīlokadāyakam //
Having duly worshipped a brāhmaṇa couple, one should pray, “May Gaurī be pleased with me.” This observance is called the Gaurī-vrata, and it bestows the blessed realm of Bhavānī (Pārvatī).
This verse does not discuss pralaya; it teaches vrata-dharma—how devotional observances (vratas) yield spiritual merit and divine proximity.
It emphasizes householders’ and rulers’ dharma of honoring Brahmins and supporting sacred rites; worship of a virtuous Brahmin couple and prayer to Gaurī are presented as meritorious acts leading to auspicious spiritual results.
The ritual significance is the Gaurī-vrata: proper worship (sampūjā) of a Brahmin couple followed by a direct devotional supplication to Gaurī, with the stated fruit of attaining Bhavānī’s realm.
