Matsya Purana — The Ārdrānandakarī Tṛtīyā Vrata: Ritual Procedure
*ईश्वर उवाच तथैवान्यां प्रवक्ष्यामि तृतीयां पापनाशिनीम् नाम्ना च लोके विख्याताम् आर्द्रानन्दकरीमिमाम् //
*īśvara uvāca tathaivānyāṃ pravakṣyāmi tṛtīyāṃ pāpanāśinīm nāmnā ca loke vikhyātām ārdrānandakarīmimām //
The Lord said: “In the same manner, I shall now explain another—this third-day observance that destroys sin, renowned in the world by name, and which bestows tender (devotional) joy.”
This verse does not discuss Pralaya; it introduces a dharma topic—an observance on the Tṛtīyā (third lunar day) described as sin-destroying and widely renowned.
It frames a practical dharma instruction: householders (and rulers setting public religious standards) are encouraged to follow or patronize such vrata observances that purify wrongdoing and cultivate devotional joy.
The ritual significance is the announcement of a specific tithi-based vrata (Tṛtīyā) called “Pāpanāśinī,” indicating that the chapter will detail its method and fruits rather than architecture.
