Matsya Purana — Solar–Lunar Motions
ते वक्ष्यामि प्रसंख्याय योजनैस्तु निबोधत एकैकमन्तरं तद्वद् युक्तान्येतानि सप्तभिः //
te vakṣyāmi prasaṃkhyāya yojanaistu nibodhata ekaikamantaraṃ tadvad yuktānyetāni saptabhiḥ //
I shall now state them by enumerating their measures in yojanas; understand with care. Each interval is to be taken one by one, and in the same manner these are to be joined in groups of seven.
This verse is not about Pralaya; it introduces a technical enumeration of distances (in yojanas) and a method of arranging intervals, indicating a systematic, rule-based presentation rather than a cosmological flood narrative.
By emphasizing precise measurement and orderly arrangement, the verse supports the king’s and householder’s duty to plan settlements, roads, boundaries, and civic layouts according to established standards—key to governance, safety, and prosperity.
Its significance is methodological: it signals that the upcoming Vāstu/technical rules will be given as yojana-based intervals and organized in sevenfold sets, a common structuring device for planning standards and graded layouts.
