Matsya Purana — Pṛthu
येषां यत्र रुचिस्तत्तद् देयं तेभ्यो विजानता यज्ञश्राद्धेषु सर्वेषु मया तुभ्यं निवेदितम् //
yeṣāṃ yatra rucistattad deyaṃ tebhyo vijānatā yajñaśrāddheṣu sarveṣu mayā tubhyaṃ niveditam //
Whatever each person prefers in a given context, let that be offered to them by one who understands. This principle, applicable in all sacrifices (yajña) and all śrāddha rites, has been explained by me to you.
This verse is not about pralaya; it teaches ritual propriety—offerings in yajña and śrāddha should be suited to the recipient’s preference and context.
It advises the responsible performer (king or householder) to make informed, context-sensitive offerings—an aspect of dharma emphasizing discernment, respect, and correct ritual giving.
The significance is ritual: in all yajñas and śrāddhas, offerings (dāna/naivedya) should match suitability and preference, reflecting correct procedure rather than Vāstu or temple-building rules.
