Matsya Purana — Emergence of Brahmā from the Golden Lotus and the Lotus-Form Earth
एवं नारायणस्यार्थे मही पुष्करसंभवा प्रादुर्भावो ऽप्ययं तस्मान् नाम्ना पुष्करसंज्ञितः //
evaṃ nārāyaṇasyārthe mahī puṣkarasaṃbhavā prādurbhāvo 'pyayaṃ tasmān nāmnā puṣkarasaṃjñitaḥ //
Thus, for the sake of Nārāyaṇa, the Earth—arisen from Puṣkara—manifested in this form; therefore it is known by the name “Puṣkara.”
It does not describe Pralaya directly; it frames a sacred-origin account where the Earth’s manifestation is linked to Nārāyaṇa’s purpose and to Puṣkara as an originating locus/name.
Indirectly, it supports the Purāṇic ethic of honoring tīrthas: rulers and householders are encouraged to protect sacred sites and undertake pilgrimage/ritual acts connected with such divinely purposed places.
The verse is primarily etymological and tīrtha-focused; its ritual takeaway is that Puṣkara’s sanctity is grounded in divine purpose, making rites performed there (bathing, offerings, worship) especially meaningful in the larger Pushkara-Māhātmya context.
