Adhyaya 34 — Madālāsā’s Instruction on Sadācāra (Householder Conduct, Purity, and Daily Rites)
पादेनार्थस्य पारत्र्यं कुर्यात् सञ्चयमात्मवान् ।
अर्धेन चात्मभरणं नित्यनैमित्तिकान्वितम् ॥
pādenārthasya pāratryaṃ kuryāt sañcayam ātmavān | ardhena cātmabharaṇaṃ nityanaimittikānvitam ||
With one quarter of his wealth, a self-controlled man should make savings for the next world (through meritorious provisions). With half, he should support himself and his household, together with the regular and occasional obligations.

Economic life is moralized: wealth is to be apportioned for (1) merit/afterlife-oriented duties, and (2) responsible sustenance that includes obligatory rites—thus disciplining consumption through dharma.
