Adhyaya 21 — Kuvalayashva’s Descent to Patala and the Rescue of Madalasa
मातृपक्षेण मात्रा च ख्यातिमेति नराधमः ।
तत् पुत्र धनवीर्यैस्त्वं विवर्धस्व सुखेन च ॥
mātṛpakṣeṇa mātrā ca khyātim eti narādhamaḥ / tat putra dhanavīryais tvaṃ vivardhasva sukhena ca

Within the text’s social frame, fame grounded only in maternal association is criticized; the positive instruction is to cultivate independent excellence—prosperity joined to vīrya and sukha—so honor rests on one’s own dharmic capability.
Vaṃśānucarita: lineage discourse used to motivate virtue and competence in the heir.
‘Maternal-side fame’ can be read as borrowed identity; the blessing urges self-realization through cultivated power (vīrya) and right stewardship (dhana) harmonized with well-being (sukha).
