Virāṭa-parva Adhyāya 21 — Kīcaka’s clandestine approach and Bhīma’s covert intervention (नर्तनागारे कीचकवध-प्रसङ्गः)
उपालब्धो मया राजा कड्कश्चापि पुन: पुनः । ततो न वारितो राज्ञा न तस्याविनय: कृत:,मैंने राजा विराट और कंकको बार-बार फटकारा, तो भी राजाने न तो उसे मना किया और न उसकी उद्दण्डताका दमन ही किया
upālabdho mayā rājā kaṅkaś cāpi punaḥ punaḥ | tato na vārito rājñā na tasyāvinayaḥ kṛtaḥ ||
Bhīmasena said: “I repeatedly reproached King Virāṭa, and Kaṅka as well. Yet the king did not restrain him, nor did he curb that man’s insolence.”
भीमसेन उवाच
A ruler’s dharma includes restraining misconduct in his presence; failing to check insolence enables adharma and undermines justice and order.
Bhīma reports that he repeatedly scolded both King Virāṭa and Kaṅka, but the king did not intervene to restrain Kaṅka or correct his improper behavior.
