क्यों न हो, इस राजपरिवारमें भी तो ये दोनों एक ही समयसे निवास करते हैं?” इस तरहकी बातें कहकर रानी सुदेष्णा प्राय: नित्य मुझे झिड़का करती हैं ।।
krudhyantī māṃ ca samprekṣya samaśaṅkata māṃ tvayi | tasyāṃ tathā bruvatyāṃ tu duḥkhaṃ māṃ mahad āviśat ||
Seeing me upset, the queen grew suspicious of me in relation to you, imagining a hidden attachment. And whenever she spoke in that manner, a great sorrow overwhelmed me—caught between duty in the household and the pain of being misunderstood.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the ethical weight of reputation and the suffering caused by suspicion: even without wrongdoing, perceived impropriety can create distress, so one must act with restraint and clarity in relationships within a royal household.
The queen, noticing the speaker’s emotional state, suspects a secret attachment involving the person addressed as ‘you’ (tvayi). Her repeated insinuations cause the speaker deep sorrow.
