Draupadī’s Lament and Indictment of Misfortune
यस्यां भीमस्तथा शेते मृगराज इव श्वसन् । वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--राजन्! ऐसा कहती हुई मनस्विनी द्रौपदीने उस भवनमें प्रवेश किया, जिसमें सिंहकी भाँति साँसें खींचते हुए भीमसेन सो रहे थे ।।
yasyāṃ bhīmas tathā śete mṛgarāja iva śvasan |
Vaiśampāyana said: O King, Draupadī—steadfast in mind—entered that dwelling where Bhīmasena lay asleep, breathing heavily like a lion. The scene underscores the Pāṇḍavas’ concealed life in Virāṭa’s realm: even in disguise and domestic settings, Bhīma’s formidable nature remains evident, while Draupadī’s purposeful approach reflects vigilance, endurance, and the ethical strain of living incognito under threat.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Even under concealment and hardship, inner nature and duty persist: Bhīma’s protective power remains palpable, while Draupadī’s composed resolve reflects ethical endurance—maintaining purpose and vigilance without abandoning dharma during perilous anonymity.
Vaiśampāyana describes Draupadī entering the place where Bhīma is asleep; Bhīma’s heavy, lion-like breathing emphasizes his latent strength. The moment sets a tense domestic scene within the Pandavas’ hidden year in Virāṭa’s domain.
