Bṛhannadā’s Entry into Virāṭa’s Assembly
tam āyāntam abhiprekṣya bhrājamānaṃ nararṣabham | samupasthāya vai rājā papraccha kurunandanam ||
Seeing Sahadeva—the best of men—approaching the royal hall, radiant with a divine splendor, King Virāṭa himself rose, went forward to receive him with due respect, and then questioned that delight of the Kuru line.
The verse highlights dharmic kingship and social ethics: a ruler should honor excellence and virtue with humility and proper reception, and only then engage in inquiry. Respectful conduct (satkāra) is portrayed as a prerequisite to meaningful dialogue.
Sahadeva, appearing radiant, comes toward the royal assembly. King Virāṭa rises from his seat, goes forward to receive him, and then begins to question him.
