Agastya’s request for wealth and the decision to seek resources from Ilvala

Lomaśa said: “Vātāpi, assuming the form of a ram, could become whatever form he wished in an instant. Ilvala would then cook (that flesh) and feed it to a brāhmaṇa; afterward, he would desire to kill the brāhmaṇa.” The passage underscores a grave adharma: the deliberate deception and violence against brāhmaṇas, using illusion and hospitality as a weapon, turning sacred norms of feeding guests into a means of slaughter.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights adharma arising from māyā and cruelty: when hospitality and food—normally sacred duties—are used to deceive and harm the innocent, it becomes a profound ethical transgression, especially against brāhmaṇas who represent learning and ritual order.

Lomaśa describes Ilvala’s method of killing brāhmaṇas: his brother Vātāpi takes the form of a ram by shape-shifting; Ilvala cooks that meat and serves it to a brāhmaṇa, and afterward intends to kill the brāhmaṇa (as part of their murderous deception).
