Dhaumya’s Enumeration of Eastern Tīrthas

Prācī-diś Tīrtha-kathana

puṣkare tu tapas tapyed dānaṃ dadyān mahālaye | malaye tv agnim ārohed bhṛgutunge tv anāśanam ||

Pulastya said: “One should practice austerities at Puṣkara; one should give gifts at Mahālaya; one should mount the fire on Mount Malaya; and one should undertake fasting (anāśana) at Bhṛgutunga.”

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that spiritual purification and merit are pursued through disciplined actions—tapas (austerity), dāna (charity), and fasting—each recommended at particular sacred sites renowned for those practices.

Pulastya is instructing his listener about tīrtha-practices: where to perform austerities, where to give gifts, and where to undertake severe vows such as entering fire or fasting, as part of a broader discourse on the power of pilgrimage and penance.
