Pulastya said: “O delight of the Kurus, it is proclaimed that here alone—at Prayāga—abide ten thousand sacred fords, and sixty crores besides. The merit gained through mastery of the four branches of sacred learning, and the merit attained by those devoted to truthfulness—all of that is obtained simply by bathing at the confluence of the Gaṅgā and Yamunā.”
घुलस्त्य उवाच
The passage elevates Prayāga’s confluence-bath as a concentrated act of dharma: a single ritual of purification is said to yield the same spiritual merit as extensive learning and the lifelong discipline of truthfulness, emphasizing the sanctity of place and the transformative power of sincere pilgrimage.
Pulastya, while describing pilgrimage sites in the Tīrthayātrā section of the Vana Parva, praises Prayāga to a Kuru prince (addressed as Kuru-nandana), declaring the extraordinary presence of innumerable tīrthas there and the exceptional merit of bathing at the Gaṅgā–Yamunā confluence.
