Dhaumya’s Enumeration of Eastern Tīrthas
Prācī-diś Tīrtha-kathana
pratarecca kulaṁ puṇyaṁ sarvapāpaṁ vyapohati | gosahasraphalaṁ labdhvā punāti svakulaṁ naraḥ ||
By crossing over, a man causes his virtuous lineage to cross as well. He removes all sin; and, having obtained the merit equal to a thousand gifts of cows, he purifies his own family line.
Personal spiritual progress is not isolated: when a person ‘crosses over’ through dharmic conduct and merit, he dispels sin and becomes a purifier of his lineage, gaining merit likened to the great gift of a thousand cows.
Pulastya is explaining the religious-ethical consequence of a certain dharmic act (implied by the surrounding discourse): it enables one to transcend peril/sin, earns immense merit (compared to gosahasra-dāna), and sanctifies one’s family line.
