Educational Q&A

Austerity (tapas) is praised as most potent and dharmic when it is joined to pitṛbhakti—reverence and devoted duty toward one’s father and ancestors—so spiritual discipline is grounded in gratitude, lineage-duty, and ethical intention.

Rāma (Paraśurāma) receives a response from the forefathers: they are pleased and joyfully bless him, wishing that his tapas may increase further, emphasizing that his special devotion to his father/ancestors is the cause of their satisfaction.
