Damayantī’s Svayaṃvara: Divine Disguises, Truth-Vow, and Choosing Nala

Having first honored them with worship, Maghavān (Indra), the all-pervading and mighty lord, then inquired after their unfailing welfare—asking both about their well-being and freedom from illness, and also about the auspicious state of the world at large. The scene underscores a ruler’s dharmic courtesy: reverence before inquiry, and concern that extends beyond oneself to the wider order of beings.
