Arjuna said: “Mahādeva! In sheer rashness I fought with you; it is not an offense born of intent—this happened through ignorance. O Śaṅkara, I have now come seeking your refuge; forgive that insolence.” Vaiśampāyana said: Then the mighty, radiant Lord—Śiva, whose banner bears the bull—smiled and, taking hold of Arjuna’s beautiful arm, said to Phālguna, “I have already forgiven you.”

Educational Q&A

Rash action and ignorance can lead to wrongdoing, but genuine surrender, humility, and repentance invite forgiveness; divine grace restores moral balance without denying the seriousness of the act.

After Arjuna seeks refuge and asks pardon for his audacious combat, Śiva (Vṛṣabhadhvaja) smiles, takes Arjuna’s arm, and explicitly declares him forgiven, resolving the tension of the encounter.
