yudhiṣṭhira uvāca | puruṣaḥ phalam āpnoti caturthaṃ nātra kāraṇam | kuśalāḥ pratijānanti ye vai tattvavido janāḥ |

Yudhiṣṭhira said: A person attains results, and in this matter there is no fourth cause. Those who are skilled and truly know reality declare with certainty that a human being gains some outcomes through fate, some through forceful effort, and some through one’s own nature.

Educational Q&A

Results arise from three sources—fate (daiva), personal exertion or forceful effort (hāṭha/puruṣakāra), and one’s inherent nature (svabhāva); no separate fourth cause is needed to explain success or failure.

In the forest-exile discourse, Yudhiṣṭhira reflects on why outcomes occur and articulates a principled view that balances destiny, human striving, and innate disposition as the main explanatory factors.
