Vaiśaṃpāyana said: “Therefore we wish to live in concealment this year; you ought to grant us permission for that. For Suyodhana—evil-minded—together with Karṇa and Saubala (Śakuni) bears intense enmity toward us. They are eager to discover our whereabouts and have also set spies in motion. If our residence becomes known, they may even treat our elders and kinsmen—those connected with us—harshly and unjustly.”

Educational Q&A

The passage highlights prudent dharma in adversity: when faced with unjust hostility and surveillance, one may adopt concealment to prevent harm not only to oneself but also to elders and relatives. Ethical responsibility extends to protecting one’s wider social network from retaliatory abuse.

The speakers (the exiled heroes) request permission to remain hidden for the year, explaining that Duryodhana, Karna, and Śakuni are actively searching for them and have deployed spies; if discovered, these enemies may mistreat their connected elders and kinsmen.
